UntrikiWiki focuses on all things wiki. We serve as trusted advisers to organizations on both Wikipedia and the use of private wikis.

We strive to amplify institutional knowledge through the practice of wikis. Our mission is to help our clients leverage their knowledge through customized wiki solutions tailored to their needs.

Our Theory

On Inclusionism

“But I think the whole notion of [... ]Wikipedia, the whole notion of “encyclopedic” sort of says everything, doesn’t it? It means broad.” — Ward Cunningham (Inventor of the Wiki)

Business themselves have knowledge that is worthy encyclopedic information. Yet it may not be recorded in Wikipedia for two reasons. It may not be of subject matter that is readily worked on by volunteers. Presentation and deliverance must also reflect the encyclopedic mission, and promotional attempts may be deleted. These differences are not insurmountable, but rather require education and brokerage between the preexisting Wikipedia community and new editors.

Notability is broken on Wikipedia. Traditionally one first appeals to Notability Policy in arguments both for and against a specific article. Yet on Wikipedia there is the principle of ‘ignore all rules’ which can be combat policy. Together these two contentions effectively mean that

“something is notable if we want to include it.”—Wikipedian User:DGG Speaker at Wikimania conference 2012.

On Wikis

Wikis are documents: technologically evolved.
Wikis revolutionize the way we access and share information. They are the reconceptualization of “documentation” itself. Where once technology and tradition constrained them , wikis operate under new assumptions:

>> Many authors vs. Fewer authors – Content creation and growth is exponentially quicker.

>> Dynamic versions vs. static pages -There are no final documents–every revision is a save

>> Linked discussion vs. no discussion – Allows for conversations that closely follow each article.

>> Alternative taxonomies vs. Indexes – Convenient search, and exploratory browsing.

On Structure

Structuring a network of content is subtle and profound.

The most natural way that we have been taught to think about organizing such a document is to impose a strict hierarchy. This is not only a mammoth task that requires oversight, but is limiting compared to the concept of “tagging”. In a hierarchy, every article can only be part of one branch; but in the tagging categorization, articles can have many tags which themselves can also have many tags. This is a far richer system with the benefit of being able to simulate several concurrent hierarchies, or even loops or sequences of information. We can sometimes approximate ideas in our head with hierarchy, but that is not a natural state of thought.

Intertwingularity is the notion of the irreconcilable complexity of relations in human knowledge.
Wikipedia’s existence and ease with a master index is proof that “everything is deeply intertwingled.” Ted Nelson.

Together all the elements of a wiki embody a docuverse – an electronic superdocument chronicling subdocuments and their complex relationships, histories, and authors.
